Leipzig has an international reputation as a city of fair and music. This is based not least on the works of
Johann Sebastian Bach, cantor from 1723 to 1750, the St. Thomas' Boys Choir, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, based
in the Gewandhaus concert hall on Augustusplatz, the opera, the symphony orchestra, choir and children's choir of the
MDR-Television. In Leipzig there worked musicians such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. Leipzig is in
the tradition of Caroline Neuber as well as a city of the theater with The Schauspiel Leipzig Centraltheater, The LOFFT, theater fact,
the INSELbühne, The Theater der Jungen Welt and the "Poetisches Theater", just to name a few. – The local Academy of Visual Arts
is a prestigious art school. In the field of painting the "Leipzig School" as well as "New Leipzig School" achieved international fame and dimension.
Leipzig is famous for its nightlife. The city has no curfew hour. Relevant addresses for going out, to inspect the nightlife, are for instance the
Moritzbastei, a youth and student club in the former city bastions, the Market, the Theater district, the "Drallewatsch" or an area called "Südmeile",
which stretches from the "Südvorstadt" up to "Connewitz". Temples of local gastronomy and scene pubs offer something for every taste. Friends of revue
and cabaret make a find in the Krystallpalast variety theatre, located in the city centre at Magazingasse. There you can experience music, theatre, dance and
entertainment with a professional claim. Known cabarets are the "Leipziger Pfeffermühle", "Leipziger Funzel", "academixer" as well as "SanftWut". Famous sights
are the more than 600 years old University, the Leipzig Fair, the Red Bull Arena, the Natural History Museum, the GRASSI Museum complex on Johannisplatz and
the Leipzig Zoo with it‘s further attraction, the Tropical Experience World Gondwanaland, a gigantic tropical hall of 16,500 square meters with a lot of
exotic plants and animals. Also the Leipzig Central Station, the German National Library, the Monument of the Battle of the Nations, the Workshops and
Museum of Printing Art (in Plagwitz) and the Dölitz Gatehouse are well worth a visit. The city has a remarkable number of cinemas, some with decades of history.
The International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film, taking place annually, appeals to filmmakers from around the world.
